Living in Boston in the last week.

After a tumultuous week in Boston, it has made me reflect on the impact art and music has on a community.  Music brings beauty and refuge to a community that can succumb to violence and inhumanity.  Like my choir director said this morning, “Singing is important. Singing together is more important. And singing in this community is the most important.”  Sometimes when one gets too wrapped up in other things, it is easy to forget what is important.  Art, especially music, is meant to communicate something, and the message we communicate can be a powerful one.  This week, the importance of art in Boston became overwhelmingly clear.  We need to communicate that violence will not be tolerated and peace will prevail.  This week has made me proud to be a musician.
